A former top boss of one of China’s biggest airlines, China Eastern, is being investigated for serious rule-breaking, which usually means corruption. Liu Shaoyong was the head of China Eastern Airlines from 2009 to 2022. He helped the airline grow stronger after a time of heavy losses. Under his leadership, the airline joined an international group of airlines and merged with another airline, Shanghai Airlines.
Before working at China Eastern, Liu also led another big airline in China called China Southern. He also served as the Communist Party head at China Eastern Airlines, which gave him a lot of influence.
Now, China’s top anti-corruption body is looking into Liu’s actions. They haven’t shared the exact details yet, but such investigations are often about misuse of power or money.
Since becoming China’s leader over ten years ago, President Xi Jinping has launched a strict campaign to stop corruption. Supporters say this helps clean up the government, but some people believe it's also used to remove political enemies.
