North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed strong support for China’s vision of a “multipolar world” during a high-level meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Pyongyang. The talks highlight growing cooperation between the two traditional allies.
During the meeting, Kim emphasized North Korea’s backing of China’s “one-China principle,” reaffirming Beijing’s stance on Taiwan. He also discussed regional and global issues of mutual concern, signaling deeper strategic alignment between the two nations.
Wang Yi, who was on a two-day official visit, described bilateral relations as entering a “new phase” following recent diplomatic engagements, including a summit between Kim and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The discussions come at a time when North Korea is seeking to strengthen ties with key partners amid rising geopolitical tensions. Kim has been pursuing a more assertive foreign policy, aiming to reduce isolation and build alliances with countries opposing U.S. influence.
In recent years, North Korea has also expanded cooperation with Russia while maintaining strong economic and political ties with China. The resumption of direct flights and train services between the two countries further reflects improving relations after pandemic-related disruptions.
Wang Yi’s visit, his first in seven years, also included meetings with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Sun Hui, focusing on expanding exchanges and cooperation across various sectors.
The visit comes ahead of a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, raising hopes among some officials that renewed diplomacy could influence regional stability, although North Korea has remained firm in its stance against U.S. demands on denuclearization.
