Xi Jinping held a high-level meeting with Taiwan’s opposition leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing, marking the first such interaction in more than a decade amid ongoing cross-strait tensions.
The meeting took place at the Great Hall of the People, where both leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability around Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by China.
During the discussions, both sides expressed a shared interest in pursuing peaceful engagement and avoiding conflict. Xi highlighted the inevitability of closer ties between people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, while Cheng stressed mutual respect despite differences in political systems.
The talks come at a time when China has intensified military activities near Taiwan, including deploying warships and fighter jets in the region. Despite these tensions, both leaders reiterated their commitment to dialogue and stability.
Cheng’s visit included stops in Shanghai and Nanjing before arriving in Beijing. She has positioned herself as a supporter of peaceful relations and has advocated for reducing tensions through diplomatic engagement.
The meeting also touched on economic and international issues, including Taiwan’s potential participation in regional trade agreements. Analysts believe the talks could help open informal communication channels between both sides.
However, the visit has sparked debate within Taiwan, especially as the current leadership continues to emphasize defense readiness and warns against compromising sovereignty.
Experts suggest the meeting holds strategic importance for China, as it signals an effort to shape cross-strait relations through political engagement while maintaining its broader geopolitical stance.
