On April 10, 2026, eight people were hospitalized following a chlorine gas leak at the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre. This alarming situation necessitated an extensive emergency response, leading to the evacuation of not only the facility but also nearby regions.
Officials reported that the gas was inadvertently released when two chemicals interacted inside the pool, resulting in an uncontrolled reaction. Dan Atkinson noted that emergency services received a 911 alert shortly before noon due to a strong, irritating smell reported by witnesses, which negatively affected individuals' respiratory systems.
Emergency responders arrived to find that staff had already started evacuating patrons from the premises. They quickly recognized the seriousness of the chemical exposure and provided immediate first aid to those impacted. Eight individuals were subsequently taken to the hospital, suffering from various symptoms, including coughing and difficulty breathing. Fortunately, health officials confirmed that all patients were in stable condition.
Specialized hazardous materials teams were deployed to manage the situation, donning protective suits and breathing apparatuses to enter the building and take control of the gas leak. Authorities explained that measures involved isolating the hazardous area while ventilating the location to ensure safety.
As a precautionary measure, residents and businesses in the vicinity were asked to stay indoors, secure their windows and doors, and disable ventilation systems. The alert affected surrounding streets and significant local sites. The public safety warning was eventually lifted in the afternoon when containment was assured.
Police cordoned off several roads near the scene to facilitate emergency operations. Moreover, over 100 individuals were safely evacuated from a nearby mosque as an added safety precaution.
Witnesses described a pungent chlorine smell occurring before the sound of emergency sirens. Some exiting the pool were seen wrapped in emergency blankets as assistance was rendered to affected individuals.
City officials announced that the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre would remain closed until early Tuesday morning for a comprehensive safety evaluation and cleanup. All scheduled activities at the facility are postponed.
The specific reason for the chemical reaction is currently under investigation. Authorities emphasized that incidents involving chlorine gas are infrequent at this location and will reevaluate safety protocols following this event.
