Pro‑Iran Protesters Clash with Security Near U S Embassy in Baghdad Amid Rising Tensions

Post by : Shakul

Hundreds of **pro‑Iran protesters gathered near the fortified Green Zone in Baghdad on 1 March 2026, expressing outrage over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in recent U.S.–Israeli airstrikes. The demonstrations quickly turned confrontational as crowds tried to advance toward the U.S. Embassy compound, throwing stones and chanting slogans against Washington and its allies. Security forces responded by deploying tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd and prevent a breach of the diplomatic district.

Protesters, many waving flags linked to pro‑Iran armed groups, pushed against heavily deployed Iraqi riot police at entrances to the Green Zone, with some attempting to bypass concrete barriers and reach the embassy area. Clashes were reported at the main approaches near the Green Zone’s Suspension Bridge, where security sources said protesters engaged in hand‑to‑hand confrontations with officers.

Iraqi authorities have maintained a strong security presence to protect diplomatic missions and government buildings, and so far there have been no official casualty figures from the Baghdad demonstrations. However, ambulances and security reinforcements were seen responding to the scene as tear gas and loud disturbances echoed through adjacent streets.

The protests in Iraq reflect wider unrest across the region following the death of Khamenei, with similar demonstrations occurring in other countries. While the Baghdad rallies began largely peacefully, they intensified as demonstrators sought to voice solidarity with Iran and condemn foreign military operations perceived as violations of sovereignty.
