China Rejects U.S. Call for Trilateral Nuclear Arms Talks

China Rejects U.S. Call for Trilateral Nuclear Arms Talks

Post by : Shakul

China has firmly rejected a proposal from the United States calling for trilateral nuclear arms control talks involving China, the U.S. and Russia, labeling the idea unfair, unreasonable and impractical.

Responding to questions on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China’s nuclear arsenal is far smaller than those of the United States and Russia, making such negotiations fundamentally unequal.

Mao stressed that China has repeatedly clarified its stance on nuclear disarmament, emphasizing that countries with the world’s largest nuclear stockpiles bear the primary responsibility for arms reduction. She added that pushing China into trilateral talks at this stage ignores the significant disparity in nuclear capabilities.

China maintains a long-standing policy of minimum nuclear deterrence and has consistently stated that it will not engage in arms races. Beijing argues that meaningful progress in nuclear disarmament should begin with major nuclear powers significantly reducing their arsenals first.

The spokesperson also reiterated that the United States, as the country with one of the world’s largest nuclear weapons inventories, should fulfill its international obligations toward nuclear disarmament, which China says reflects the broad consensus of the global community.

The statement comes amid renewed global debates over nuclear arms control, strategic stability, and rising geopolitical tensions among major powers.
