A flight from Qingdao to Shanghai had to land early in Nanjing on Friday after something went wrong mid-air. People on the plane said they smelled something burning and heard loud bangs. The plane started shaking slightly, and many got scared.
One passenger said it seemed like something got sucked into the plane’s left engine while they were flying. The captain quickly announced an emergency landing in Nanjing, and the landing went smoothly.
After the plane landed, emergency vehicles like fire trucks and police cars came to the scene to check everything. Thankfully, everyone on board was safe. The airline gave each passenger 400 yuan (about US$56) as a form of compensation and sent another plane to continue the journey.
Flight data showed the plane took off at 3:22 p.m. and was supposed to land in Shanghai at 4:50 p.m., but it landed in Nanjing at 4:26 p.m. The plane was a Boeing 737 and had been flying for 13 years.
In recent weeks, there have been several other emergency landings in China for different reasons. One plane had to turn back because of smoke from a power bank, and another flight had to change its landing due to a technical issue.
The aviation authority in China now says power banks without proper safety marks (like the 3C mark) are not allowed on flights, as they’ve caused fire and smoke incidents this year. Safety rules are getting stricter to protect everyone on board.
