Japan has confirmed that a Japanese national has been detained in Iran and has strongly demanded the person’s immediate release. The detention took place in Tehran on January 20, according to Japanese officials.
Speaking at a press briefing, Masanao Ozaki, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan, said Tokyo has raised the issue directly with Iranian authorities but did not provide further details about the case.
Media reports have suggested that the detained individual may be a senior staff member from the Tehran bureau of Japanese public broadcaster NHK. According to these reports, the person was arrested and transferred to Evin Prison, a facility known for holding political and foreign detainees.
Another report identified the journalist as Shinnosuke Kawashima, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. Japanese authorities have not officially confirmed the identity.
The Japanese government said it continues to seek clarification and is pressing Iran for a swift and safe resolution of the case.
