Richard Liu, the visionary founder of JD.com, has launched a new eco-friendly yacht brand named Sea Expandary, committing a substantial investment of $690 million (5 billion yuan) to transform the global yacht industry. The brand’s mission is to produce affordable, environmentally sustainable yachts designed for ordinary households, aiming to make luxury boating accessible to a broader audience while promoting green technologies in maritime transport.
Sea Expandary will oversee all aspects of the business, including research and development, manufacturing, and sales. The company has established its headquarters in Shenzhen and a manufacturing base in Zhuhai, taking advantage of both cities’ industrial infrastructure and government support. Despite his significant investment in the venture, Liu has clarified that he will not be involved in the day-to-day operations, preferring to focus on his primary role at JD.com.
The initiative aligns with China’s rapidly growing middle class, whose rising disposable incomes are fueling demand for leisure and premium lifestyle products. In addition, strategic agreements with the Shenzhen and Zhuhai governments provide regulatory support and incentives, helping Sea Expandary implement its ambitious plan to expand China’s yacht fleet from 4,500 to nearly 10,000 units over the next three years.
By combining affordability, sustainability, and innovation, Sea Expandary aims to compete on a global scale, challenging traditional yacht manufacturers while showcasing China’s capabilities in eco-friendly maritime technology. Liu’s venture represents a shift toward green luxury products, reflecting both environmental responsibility and the evolving tastes of China’s new affluent consumer base.
