China has imposed export restrictions on 40 Japanese entities, claiming they are contributing to Japan's remilitarization. Twenty companies were placed on an export control list, banning dual-use items for civilian and military purposes, while the remaining 20 were put on a watchlist requiring license applications, risk assessments, and assurances that exports won’t support military use.
Affected companies include subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Fujitsu, Subaru Corporation, and Mitsubishi Materials Corporation. The Chinese Commerce Ministry emphasized that measures target only a small number of companies and will not impact regular trade.
Japan has formally protested the restrictions, calling them unacceptable and urging China to lift the controls. Tokyo officials stated the measures largely diverge from international norms and pledged to respond appropriately. Some Japanese firms noted that their trade with China is minimal, so the impact may be limited.
The restrictions follow remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hinting Japan could respond if China uses military force against Taiwan, which China claims as its own. Analysts see this as part of escalating tensions over Taiwan and Japan’s security policies.
