Thailand is facing a surge in Streptococcus suis infections, with 49 confirmed cases and 3 deaths reported so far this year, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) announced.
The infections affect people aged 5 to 90, with elderly males being most vulnerable. Nakhon Ratchasima has the highest number of cases, followed by Phrae, Chon Buri, Chaiyaphum, and Surin.
Risk factors include consuming undercooked pork or pork blood, especially in dishes like laab raw, larb, and koi, drinking alcohol with raw pork, and working in pig slaughtering or handling without protective equipment. Cuts or open wounds on hands increase susceptibility.
Symptoms usually appear within 3 days of exposure, starting with fever, headaches, body aches, dizziness, joint pain, rashes, lethargy, and stiff neck. In severe cases, the infection spreads to the bloodstream and brain, potentially causing hearing loss, unsteady walking, and life-threatening complications.
The DDC urges the public to avoid raw pork, purchase meat only from certified sources, and wear protective gear when handling pigs. Proper hygiene after contact with pigs is also essential. Farmers are encouraged to follow veterinary infection control measures to prevent further outbreaks.
Prompt medical attention is critical to reduce the risk of severe illness or death from Streptococcus suis infection.
