Health authorities in Japan have reported a rise in measles cases in early 2026. Data released on February 24 shows that 43 cases were confirmed in the first seven weeks of the year, higher than the same period last year.
Out of the total cases, 13 were imported, 22 were infected domestically, and the source of infection for eight cases remains unknown. Tokyo, Osaka, Chiba, and Niigata have recorded the highest number of cases. More than half of the patients are aged between 20 and 40.
Local governments have released travel histories of infected individuals. Authorities have advised people who may have shared locations or public transport with patients to monitor their health for 21 days. Anyone experiencing fever or rash is urged to seek medical care promptly, wear a mask, and avoid public transportation.
Health officials warn that measles is highly contagious, with one patient capable of infecting many others. While cases remained low between 2020 and 2022, numbers rose steadily in recent years and increased sharply in 2025. The current trend has raised concerns about further spread if precautions are not followed.
