Indonesia has started building a very big battery project to support green energy. This project is called the Indonesia Battery Integration Project. It began on Sunday at Karawang New Industry City in West Java Province. The project is led by Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend Co., Ltd. (CBL), which is part of Brunp Recycling Technology from China. Brunp itself is owned by CATL, a famous battery company. They are working together with PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM) and Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC).
This project is very large. It will cover more than 2,000 hectares of land. The companies will spend nearly USD 6 billion to complete it. The project will include everything needed for battery production. This includes nickel mining, making battery materials, battery recycling, and building batteries. The nickel mining and processing will happen at FHT Industrial Park in East Halmahera, North Maluku Province. The battery making will be done in Karawang, West Java Province.
In Karawang, the battery plant will have the power to make 6.9 GWh of batteries every year in the first phase. They will use modern factory systems from CATL to make sure the batteries are high quality and produced efficiently. This will help Indonesia and the world move faster towards electric vehicles and clean energy.
Another important part of the project is Indonesia’s first renewable energy circular system. This means that they will use clean energy and advanced technology to produce batteries with very low energy use. They will also recycle old batteries. The facility is expected to produce 142,000 tons of nickel and 30,000 tons of cathode materials every year. It will also recycle about 20,000 tons of used batteries. The metal recovery rate will be over 95%, which is very good for the environment.
President Prabowo Subianto attended the groundbreaking ceremony. He said this project is the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia and shows that Indonesia is serious about clean energy. He said Indonesia is happy to work with other countries to build a green battery industry.
This project will also create many jobs. About 8,000 people will get direct jobs, and around 35,000 other jobs will be created indirectly. The project will also help Indonesia reach its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2060.
The start of this project is a big step for Indonesia. It will make CATL stronger around the world and help ensure that battery materials are always available. It will also support the idea of using and reusing materials in a way that protects the Earth.
