Witness Child Struggles After Zara’s Death

Witness Child Struggles After Zara’s Death

Post by : Shakul

A child believed to be the last person to see Zara Qairina Mahathir alive is reportedly struggling with deep emotional trauma and guilt, her mother told the Coroner’s Court in Kota Kinabalu. The 41-year-old woman said her daughter became distressed and would often cry when recalling her final interaction with Zara before the tragic incident.

According to the testimony, the child had encountered Zara late at night at a school hostel, where the teenager appeared upset and expressed thoughts of jumping. The witness briefly spoke with her and guided her back to her room, but later blamed herself for not doing more to help. The mother said her daughter only revealed the full details months later due to severe emotional distress.

The incident has had a lasting psychological impact on the child, who became withdrawn and emotionally unstable following Zara’s death. The mother added that her daughter would often avoid discussing the matter, simply asking her to recite prayers instead. Concerns about social media backlash also contributed to the child’s fear and hesitation in coming forward earlier.

Zara, aged 13, was found unconscious at her hostel and later died at Hospital Queen Elizabeth in July 2025. Her death sparked nationwide attention in Malaysia, raising questions about possible bullying and transparency in the investigation, as authorities continue to examine the case.
