Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Captain Across All Formats

Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Captain Across All Formats

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

Indian women’s cricket is set for a major leadership transition after Harmanpreet Kaur announced her decision to step down as captain of the national team across all three formats. The veteran cricketer has decided to end her leadership responsibilities with immediate effect but will continue her international career as a player. The announcement marks the conclusion of one of the longest and most significant captaincy spells in the history of the India Women Cricket Team. Kaur has been at the centre of Indian women’s cricket for years, leading the side through major international tournaments, memorable victories and several important transitions. At 37, Kaur leaves the captaincy after building a leadership record that includes a historic World Cup triumph, Asian Games success and a long stint at the top of India’s T20I setup.

Harmanpreet Kaur confirms decision to leave captaincy

Kaur announced her decision through a lengthy statement shared on Instagram. She described stepping away from the captaincy as a difficult decision, reflecting on the years of memories, emotions, sacrifices and experiences that came with leading the national side. However, the former captain also made it clear that her international journey is not over. She will continue to represent India as a player and now wants to focus on enjoying the game without the additional responsibility of leading the team. Her decision means Indian cricket will now begin a new chapter, with a new captain expected to take responsibility for the team across the formats.

A captaincy journey that began in T20 cricket

Kaur first took over the captaincy of India in the shortest format in 2016. Her leadership role expanded considerably over the following years as she became one of the central figures in the development of Indian women’s cricket. After Mithali Raj retired from international cricket, Kaur became India's full-time captain in both ODIs and Tests in 2022. This gave her responsibility across all three formats and placed her at the forefront of the national team's international campaigns. Over the years, she led India through major ICC tournaments, multi-nation competitions and global sporting events.

Historic World Cup victory defines her leadership legacy

The biggest achievement of Kaur's captaincy came in November 2025 when India won their maiden Women's Cricket World Cup title on home soil. The historic triumph became one of the most important moments in the history of Women’s Cricket World Cup cricket in India. The victory also placed Kaur in an exclusive group of Indian captains who have lifted a 50-over World Cup trophy. Kaur became only the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to lead an Indian side to a 50-over World Cup title. For Indian women's cricket, the triumph represented the culmination of years of growth, investment and increased attention toward the women's game.

Kaur's record across all three formats

During her captaincy career, Kaur led India in five Test matches, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is. Her T20I leadership numbers are particularly significant. She became the first captain in international cricket, across both men's and women's cricket, to lead a team in more than 150 T20I matches. That longevity underlines the central role she played in India's T20 setup for more than a decade. Her leadership also helped India make deep runs in several major tournaments, including the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

Success beyond the World Cup

Kaur's captaincy record is not limited to India's historic World Cup success. She also guided India to a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. India reached the final of the women's cricket competition at the Birmingham Games, with Kaur producing a notable 65-run innings during the tournament. Although India ultimately missed out on the gold medal, the campaign was another important milestone for women's cricket in the country. Her leadership also featured India's appearances in the semi-finals of the 2018 and 2023 ICC Women's T20 World Cups. India also finished runners-up at the 2020 edition.

Back-to-back Asian Games gold medals

Another important part of Kaur's leadership journey came at the Asian Games. India won gold in women's cricket at the 2023 Asian Games, and the team secured another gold medal in 2026. Kaur's final assignment as captain ended with the second consecutive Asian Games gold medal. The achievement gave her captaincy tenure another major international success just before she decided to step away from leadership.

Why this is an important moment for Indian women's cricket

The departure of Kaur from the captaincy is significant because she has been one of the most familiar faces of the Indian Women Cricket Team for many years. Her leadership coincided with a period when women's cricket in India experienced major growth. The team gained greater visibility, international success and a larger following, while women's cricket also received increasing attention across the country. Kaur's tenure included both breakthrough moments and difficult campaigns, making her captaincy one of the defining periods of India's modern women's cricket era.

What happens next for Team India?

With Kaur stepping down, attention will now shift toward the next captain of the India Women Cricket Team. The new leadership group will inherit a team that has recently experienced major success, including the Women's Cricket World Cup triumph and consecutive Asian Games gold medals. The transition will therefore be closely watched as India prepares for its upcoming international assignments. For Kaur, however, the next phase will be different. She will no longer have the responsibility of making captaincy decisions but will remain available as an experienced international player.

Harmanpreet Kaur's journey continues

Stepping down as captain does not mean the end of Kaur's international career. Instead, she will now enter a new phase where she can concentrate solely on her role as a cricketer. Her own message made that intention clear. After years of carrying the responsibility of leading India, she now wants to rediscover the game from a player's perspective. For Indian cricket fans, her contribution will remain closely associated with some of the most memorable moments in the history of the women's team. The captaincy chapter has ended, but Harmanpreet Kaur remains part of India's cricket story. Her next challenge will be to contribute on the field while a new leader takes the India Captain role and guides the team into its next era.
