The White House has formally announced the creation of a new “Board of Peace,” a body tasked with overseeing the temporary governance of Gaza as the region remains under a fragile ceasefire that has been in place since October. The move is being presented as part of a broader framework designed to manage the sensitive transition period and prevent a return to large-scale instability while the truce holds.
According to the plan outlined by the White House, the Board of Peace will play a supervisory role rather than acting as a day-to-day governing authority. Its primary responsibility will be to provide strategic oversight, ensure coordination among key stakeholders, and guide administrative decisions during the interim phase. Officials say the goal is to maintain basic order, support continuity in governance, and create conditions that reduce the risk of renewed conflict.
Several high-profile figures have been named as members of the board. These include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. Under the structure detailed in the October plan, President Trump will serve as the chair of the board, giving the White House a central role in directing its overall approach.
The inclusion of both American and international figures is being viewed as an attempt to combine diplomatic experience with political influence. Supporters of the initiative argue that such a mix could help navigate the complex political, security, and humanitarian challenges facing Gaza during the ceasefire period. They say the board’s involvement may also help streamline decision-making and provide a clearer line of responsibility during a time of uncertainty.
At the same time, the ceasefire underpinning the plan remains delicate. While large-scale hostilities have paused since October, the situation on the ground continues to be tense, with concerns about security, governance gaps, and the delivery of essential services. The Board of Peace is expected to monitor developments closely and adjust its guidance as conditions evolve.
White House officials have emphasized that the board is intended as a temporary mechanism, linked specifically to the current ceasefire and transition phase. Its future role will depend on how the situation in Gaza develops and whether more permanent political arrangements can be established.
The announcement has drawn significant attention, reflecting the high stakes involved in Gaza’s future and the prominent figures appointed to the board. As the ceasefire continues, the effectiveness of the Board of Peace is likely to be closely watched, both for its impact on stability in Gaza and for its broader implications for regional diplomacy.
