North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared with his teenage daughter Kim Ju Ae at a major military parade this week, state media photos showed, sparking renewed speculation that she is being positioned as his heir.
The images, released during the closing days of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea’s Ninth Congress in Pyongyang, showed the pair wearing matching leather jackets as they watched military displays. Ju Ae also walked down a red carpet beside her father as senior military officials saluted.
Analysts say the matching jackets and high‑profile placement of Ju Ae carry symbolic weight in North Korean political culture, where imagery and symbolism often hint at leadership intentions. A South Korean intelligence agency has said she may have been designated as a successor, though she has no official title yet.
Ju Ae was first publicly introduced during a missile launch event in 2022 and made her first international appearance alongside her father in China in 2025. Her visibility at state occasions has steadily grown, leading observers to interpret these appearances as part of a long‑term strategy to elevate her status within the regime. However, Pyongyang has not publicly confirmed her age or successor status.
