Indonesia’s Trade Minister Budi Santoso said minimarkets, modern retailers, and distributors can collaborate with Red and White Village Cooperatives as product suppliers.
He explained that the cooperatives aim to empower local economies by bringing distribution channels closer to rural consumers. Cooperation with modern retail networks is not new, as small neighborhood shops have long relied on such supply chains.
The cooperatives offer advantages over regular minimarkets by providing a wider product range, including agricultural inputs like fertilizers and pesticides. They can also function as pharmacies, clinics, or exporters of village products.
Regulatory approval for modern retail expansion remains with regional governments, which are expected to balance development with village prosperity.
The Cooperatives Minister also supported partnerships with major chains such as Indomaret and Alfamart, saying such cooperation can strengthen MSMEs and meet consumer needs.
