A fresh release of documents linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has triggered renewed controversy, with new revelations involving well-known global figures. Among the disclosures is a claim that acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, mother of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, attended an afterparty at Ghislaine Maxwell’s New York townhouse in 2009.
The US Justice Department on Friday made public more than three million pages of Epstein-related material. The trove includes roughly 2,000 videos and about 1,80,000 images, along with emails and records detailing Epstein’s network and social interactions over several years.
One email, dated October 21, 2009, has drawn particular attention. Sent by veteran publicist Peggy Siegal to Jeffrey Epstein shortly after leaving the event, the message refers to an afterparty hosted at Maxwell’s residence following a screening connected to the film “Amelia,” directed by Mira Nair.
In the email, Siegal wrote that former US President Bill Clinton and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos were also present at the gathering. She mentioned Mira Nair among the attendees and described the overall response to the film as “tepid,” adding that women appeared to appreciate it more than others at the event.
The email further offered candid commentary on Hollywood-style promotional strategies, referencing a separate event at a Bloomingdale’s store and calling the atmosphere “very weird,” while noting studio-backed publicity efforts.
Separately, the newly released Epstein files also name Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in a series of email exchanges with Epstein. In one message from November 2012, Epstein asked Musk about travel plans to his private island. Musk’s reply suggested curiosity about the timing of events there, though no allegations of wrongdoing are made in the documents.
While the release of these files has reignited public scrutiny of Epstein’s associations, the documents primarily highlight social connections and communications. Legal experts caution that being named in the files does not imply criminal activity. Nevertheless, the disclosures continue to fuel debate over the extent of Epstein’s influence and access to powerful figures across politics, business, and entertainment.
