India has closed two more visa application centres in Bangladesh due to growing security concerns. The decision was taken after protests and anti-India statements were reported in different parts of the country.
What happened
India shut down visa centres in the cities of Rajshahi and Khulna. Earlier, the visa centre in Dhaka was also closed. An official notice said the centres were closed because of the ongoing security situation.
When it happened
The visa centres were closed on December 18, 2025. The move came one day after a protest march was held near the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
How it happened
A group of protesters marched near the Indian High Commission under the name “July Oikya.” During the protest, some speakers raised strong demands and made statements against India. After this, India reviewed the situation and decided to close the visa centres to ensure safety.
People who had booked appointments were informed that they would be given new dates later.
Government reactions
India has raised concerns about growing open hate speech against India, especially against the northeastern states, also known as the “seven sisters.”
Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain rejected these concerns. He said the student leader who made the remarks is not part of the government. He also said that law and order in the country remains stable and security is not affected.
Political background
The controversial remarks came from a leader of the National Citizens Party. The party emerged from student protests last year that led to the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The party supports the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Some radical voices linked to the group have also made threats against Indian officials in Bangladesh.
Election concerns
India has advised Bangladesh to ensure peaceful and fair elections. The interim government said it does not accept outside advice on elections.
Political observers in Bangladesh have warned that radical groups may try to disturb the election process by creating unrest and blaming India.
Despite strong statements from some groups, India has responded calmly. However, due to safety concerns, India shuts visa centres in Bangladesh as a precautionary step. The situation remains under watch as political tensions continue.
