Microsoft Launches Voluntary Buyouts for U.S. Employees Amid AI Transition

Microsoft Launches Voluntary Buyouts for U.S. Employees Amid AI Transition

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Microsoft has unveiled its inaugural voluntary buyout initiative for a segment of its workforce, signaling a pivotal change in employee management practices.

An internal memo distributed on Thursday revealed that the offer targets approximately 7% of the company’s U.S. personnel, equating to nearly 8,750 employees given the current workforce size. Microsoft employs around 125,000 individuals in the U.S. as part of its total 228,000 global workforce.

This buyout option is available to employees below the senior director level, as well as those whose age and tenure at Microsoft total 70 years or more.

Eligible staff and their managers will receive comprehensive information about the exit package on May 7. Historically, Microsoft’s severance arrangements have included approximately 12 weeks of base pay, along with additional compensation determined by the length of service, but actual amounts may differ by position and experience.

In the wake of this announcement, shares of Microsoft fell by over 4%, mirroring a broader slump in the software industry.

This decision comes as the tech behemoth boosts its investments in artificial intelligence and data center development. The company’s capital expenditure has surged recently and is projected to escalate further as it intensifies its efforts in the competitive AI landscape.

Analysts contend that leading tech companies collectively spent around $383 billion on capital initiatives last year, with expectations of significant increases in forthcoming years. Microsoft is anticipated to nearly double its expenditure by 2026 as it pivots towards AI-driven development.
