Zelensky Stands Firm Against US-Russia Peace Proposal

Zelensky Stands Firm Against US-Russia Peace Proposal

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Ukraine faces a critical juncture as President Volodymyr Zelensky forewarns that rejecting a proposed peace plan risks losing US support in their ongoing conflict with Russia.

Launched by US President Donald Trump, the plan demands a decision from Ukraine within a week, imposing significant concessions heavily favoring Russia—an aspect many in Kyiv and Europe find hard to reconcile.

Zelensky's Firm Rejection of Key Proposals

Zelensky openly criticized the US's terms last Friday, asserting that he would not endorse any agreement that compromises Ukraine’s national interests and has promised alternative propositions.

He cautioned that the country stands at a painful crossroads: either concede to a deal that undermines Ukraine's dignity or risk alienation from a vital ally. Zelensky stated that Ukraine must not feel coerced into a settlement that jeopardizes its enduring security.

Putin's Conditional Acceptance

In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the proposal, claiming it could provide a foundation for lasting peace; however, he warned that continued refusal from Ukraine might lead to further territorial gains for Russia.

Putin asserted that Russian forces had recently seized control of the city of Kupiansk, a claim Ukraine disputes, maintaining it remains under its jurisdiction.

Key Demands in the US Proposal

The draft proposal outlines several major demands for Ukraine:

  • Acknowledge Russian sovereignty over the currently occupied regions.

  • Withdraw troops from select parts of Donetsk.

  • Restrict its military to 600,000 personnel.

  • Commit not to join NATO.

  • Promise against hosting NATO troops on its territory.

In turn, Ukraine would be offered “security guarantees” and access to a reconstruction fund, financed through frozen Russian assets.

Russia, in exchange, would regain its economic stature on the global scene and reintegrate into the G8.

Growing Pressure as Deadline Nears

The US administration has set a deadline of November 27 for Zelensky to either accept the agreement or propose alternatives, coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday. Trump mentioned that while the timeline might be adaptable, an eventual agreement is imperative.

Zelensky has conversed with US Vice President JD Vance and held urgent discussions with Germany, France, and the UK leaders, who have shown unwavering support for Ukraine while expressing concerns that the US terms excessively favor Russia and exclude European interests.

Mixed Reactions Within Ukraine

In Kyiv, residents are split on whether to negotiate under such pressure. While some argue for engagement to uphold US relations, others believe conceding would signify defeat.

Local seamstress Yanina, 41, expressed her frustration: “Neither side is willing to compromise. This leads to a stalemate, prolonging the war.”

A Pivotal Moment for Ukraine

As the deadline looms, Ukraine must weigh its options—either seek amendments, enter negotiations, or reject the peace plan outright. Zelensky maintained that the government will remain steadfast in safeguarding Ukraine’s dignity, just as it has since the conflict erupted in 2022.

With the US and Russia pulling in opposing directions, the imminent days could significantly influence the trajectory of the ongoing conflict and Ukraine’s international affiliations.
