LandSpace Successfully Lands Zhuque-3 Rocket Booster in China

LandSpace Successfully Lands Zhuque-3 Rocket Booster in China

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

Chinese private space company LandSpace has achieved a major breakthrough in reusable rocket technology after successfully recovering the first stage of its Zhuque-3 rocket. The milestone makes LandSpace one of the few private companies in the world to successfully bring an orbital-class rocket booster back to Earth. The achievement is being seen as an important step for China reusable rockets and the country's growing commercial space industry. It also brings Chinese private launch companies closer to established players such as SpaceX and Blue Origin.

Zhuque-3 Completes Successful Booster Landing

LandSpace launched its Zhuque-3 rocket from the Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Pilot Zone in northwestern China. After completing its mission, the rocket's nine-engine first stage separated and returned toward Earth. The booster landed at a designated site in Gansu province, around 390 kilometres southeast of the launch area. This was LandSpace's second attempt to recover the Zhuque-3 first stage. The successful landing marks China's first successful ground-based, leg-assisted recovery of an orbital-class booster by a private company.

Reusable Rocket Technology Could Cut Launch Costs

The ability to recover and reuse a rocket's first stage is considered one of the most important developments in the modern space industry. Instead of manufacturing a completely new booster for every mission, companies can refurbish and fly the same hardware multiple times. This technology could significantly reduce launch expenses and make satellite launches more frequent and commercially viable. It is also a key reason why reusable rocket technology has become a major focus for space companies around the world.

Zhuque-3 Uses Methane and Stainless Steel

The Zhuque-3 is approximately 66.1 metres long and uses a stainless-steel structure. According to LandSpace, the material can provide greater heat resistance and may help reduce manufacturing costs. The rocket is powered by methane and liquid oxygen. LandSpace says the Zhuque-3 can carry up to 14.2 tonnes to low-Earth orbit in a one-way mission. The company plans to reuse the recovered booster as many as 20 times. If achieved, repeated use could help reduce the cost of future commercial space launches.

LandSpace Joins SpaceX and Blue Origin

The successful recovery strengthens LandSpace's position in the international commercial space industry. SpaceX has already demonstrated the large-scale use of reusable Falcon 9 boosters, while Blue Origin has also developed reusable launch technology. LandSpace's achievement suggests that China's private space sector is rapidly developing capabilities that were previously dominated by a small number of American companies.

China's Fourth Orbital Booster Recovery Attempt

Wednesday's success was China's fourth attempt to recover an orbital-class rocket booster. LandSpace previously conducted a reusable rocket test in December 2025. Although the rocket reached orbit as planned, its first stage failed to complete a controlled landing. China later attempted another recovery with the state-developed Long March 12A, but that booster also failed to complete its planned recovery. In July, China separately tested a sea-based booster recovery system using a net-capture method. The development highlighted Beijing's broader push toward China space technology and reusable launch systems.

Company Plans to Reuse Booster Within Six Months

LandSpace plans to use the recovered Zhuque-3 first stage again within the next six months. The company says this could help establish a foundation for more frequent and lower-cost launches. The successful landing could also improve investor confidence as LandSpace works toward a potential listing on China's Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market. The company has reportedly sought significant investment to expand its reusable launch services and commercial space capabilities. For China, the achievement represents more than a single successful landing. It signals the rapid growth of the country's private space sector and its ambition to compete in the global market for reusable launch vehicles and affordable satellite deployment.
