Zamzam Well, famously known as the world's most revered well, holds profound significance for Muslims around the globe. Situated within the sacred Mataf area of Masjid al-Haram, it stands as one of the most revered locations for those performing Hajj and Umrah.
This well reaches a depth of approximately 30 meters, with 12.80 meters of constructed structure and the remaining 17.20 meters carved from rock. Its diameter varies between 1.5 and 2.5 meters, depending on its depth.
The origins of Zamzam Well trace back to the era of Prophet Ismail. Believers recount how Prophet Ibrahim left his wife Hagar and their infant son Ismail in a barren valley devoid of water. As Hagar desperately sought water between the hills of Safa and Marwa, Angel Gabriel struck the ground, producing a miraculous flow of water. From that moment, Zamzam became synonymous with Allah's compassion and grace.
Throughout history, Saudi authorities have consistently modernized Zamzam Well to guarantee safe access to its waters for millions of visitors.
In 1373 AH, the late King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud modernized the distribution system with pumps and connected reservoirs to twelve taps, easing access for pilgrims.
During King Saud's reign in 1382 AH, structures surrounding the well were demolished, allowing for the relocation of the well beneath the Mataf and replacing the outdated bucket system with modern taps.
In 1399 AH, King Khalid initiated a major cleaning operation, employing expert divers to enhance water flow significantly.
Under King Fahd's reign in 1424 AH, studies recommended protecting the well and sealing its entrances to create additional space for tawaf and prayer.
Later, King Abdullah's leadership led to the establishment of a comprehensive purification and bottling system, incorporating advanced technologies for monitoring and distribution.
Today, under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, ongoing development projects continue to enhance Zamzam Well with improved sterilization, impurity removal, and environmental assessments.
Currently, zamzam water supplied to pilgrims at the Grand Mosque and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi undergoes multiple purification stages, ensuring quality and safety for millions of worshippers each year.
