Central Vietnam is experiencing catastrophic flooding and landslides, claiming at least 90 lives following extensive rainfall in recent days. Whole villages are underwater, major highways are blocked, and railway services halted, trapping numerous individuals.
The situation has worsened due to previous record-setting rainfall and Typhoon Kalmaegi, leaving communities eager for recovery. In the Central Highlands, continuous rain has triggered landslides that have obliterated roads, hampering rescue operations.
Rescue teams face severe challenges in accessing the hardest hit areas. Reports indicate extensive home destruction, submerged crops, and disrupted power and communication lines, further isolating those in rural locales. Local healthcare facilities are overwhelmed as they address injuries and pressing medical concerns.
Vietnam, renowned for its vulnerability to flooding, has nearly half of its population living in flood-prone zones. Scientists have cautioned that climate change is making storms more frequent and intense in Southeast Asia, transforming seasonal rainfall into dangerous floods.
As relief operations continue, communities brace themselves for ongoing rainfall, with authorities advising residents to remain indoors and avoid traveling on inundated roads.
