Concerns over potential flooding in Draper, a small community by Fort McMurray, Alberta, have emerged due to a significant ice jam. Local authorities have issued an evacuation alert as water levels in surrounding rivers surged due to the thick ice blockage. Nevertheless, warmer weather is increasingly weakening the ice, which may lessen the severity of flooding in the next few days.
Located approximately 12 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray, Draper is home to around 140 residents. Officials from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo have urged residents to remain on standby for possible evacuation. Locals are advised to assemble emergency kits and keep crucial documents accessible while closely monitoring updates from emergency services.
The ice jam has formed where the Athabasca River converges with the Clearwater River, spanning nearly 25 kilometers in length. This obstruction has resulted in a dramatic rise in river water levels, with the Clearwater River increasing about 4.5 metres and the Athabasca River rising by approximately 5.5 metres.
Several low-lying regions in the vicinity of Fort McMurray have already seen flooding, prompting the temporary closure of parks, roads, and parking areas. Residents have been advised to keep away from riverbanks due to hazardous conditions.
Emergency management teams are actively monitoring the situation through surveys and regular inspections. Another aerial assessment is scheduled to keep track of changes in water levels and ice conditions.
Emergency Management Director Jody Butz has stated that an evacuation order would only be necessary if floodwaters inundate critical access roads to Draper. Currently, officials assess that conditions are manageable.
There is optimism among authorities that persistent warmer weather will lead to natural disintegration of the ice jam, allowing for a gradual return to normal river levels. However, predicting precisely when the ice will clear remains uncertain.
Emergency responders are prepared, reflecting on experiences from the catastrophic Fort McMurray flood in 2020, which inflicted over $500 million in insured damages and displaced thousands. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and assist those in need while adhering to emergency directives. Officials confirm that the situation is under control for now, yet monitoring will continue until the flood threat subsides.
