Walmart and OpenAI have announced a new partnership that will allow customers to make purchases directly through ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot. This innovative move aims to transform online shopping by letting users "simply chat and buy" without navigating traditional eCommerce interfaces.
Through this integration, Walmart products — ranging from groceries and household items to other goods — will be available for instant checkout directly within ChatGPT. The partnership seeks to simplify everyday purchases and create a seamless shopping experience. Sam Altman, cofounder and CEO of OpenAI, said the collaboration would "make everyday purchases a little simpler," while Walmart CEO Doug McMillon highlighted that traditional online shopping, based on search bars and long lists of products, is about to change.
Although the companies have not revealed an exact launch date, Walmart confirmed that the feature will be available "soon." This initiative marks a significant expansion for OpenAI in the digital commerce space, following similar integrations with Shopify and Etsy, which also use OpenAI’s AI technology for instant checkout through Stripe’s payment systems.
The partnership with Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States, positions OpenAI to compete with major players like Amazon and Google for online shopping transactions, creating a potential new revenue stream for the company. OpenAI, which has not yet turned a profit, has been largely supported by investor funding to build and maintain its advanced AI systems.
Walmart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has also been actively incorporating AI into its operations and customer services. The company’s AI assistant, Sparky, helps shoppers navigate products, and its members at Sam’s Club, also owned by Walmart, will benefit from the upcoming ChatGPT integration. Walmart has also emphasized promoting AI literacy among its employees to support these technological initiatives.
Daniel Danker, Walmart’s executive vice president of AI Acceleration, Product and Design, said, "AI is transforming everything we do, from smarter catalogs to faster delivery, and it only works if people trust it." The new partnership is expected to revolutionize how millions of consumers shop online, combining the convenience of AI with Walmart’s extensive product offerings.
This collaboration is part of a broader trend of using AI to simplify digital shopping, enhance customer experience, and expand the reach of eCommerce platforms globally.
