Johann Wadephul, Germany's Foreign Minister, has confirmed plans to travel to China before the year's end. He made this announcement during a policy forum in Berlin on Tuesday, revealing that the new arrangements follow a last-minute cancellation of a previous trip in October.
The earlier visit was intended to be the inaugural trip by any minister from Chancellor Friedrich Merz's administration to the Chinese capital. However, Wadephul opted to cancel after the Chinese authorities only approved one meeting request, which he deemed insufficient for the discussions he wished to have.
Chancellor Merz has also indicated his interest in visiting China, targeting the early weeks of 2026. His agenda includes strengthening diplomatic relations and addressing significant global issues in tandem with Chinese officials.
This forthcoming trip by both Wadephul and Merz underscores Germany's determination to bolster and cultivate strong ties with China, despite recent hurdles. The leaders are keen to engage in discussions concerning both economic and political matters of mutual interest.
These developments reflect Germany's careful strategy in navigating its foreign policy with China while safeguarding its core interests and values. Wadephul's upcoming visit is anticipated to be a pivotal moment in this evolving diplomatic relationship.
