Vijay achieved a major political breakthrough after his party emerged as the single largest group in the Tamil Nadu state elections. The actor-turned-politician created headlines across India after his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, secured 108 seats in the 234-seat assembly. The strong performance marked an impressive debut for Vijay, who officially entered politics after ending his successful film career last year.
According to India’s Election Commission, Vijay also secured victories in both constituencies where he personally contested, Tiruchi East and Perambur. Although his party became the largest political force in the election, it remains 10 seats short of the 118 required to form a simple majority government on its own. Political analysts now expect Vijay to begin discussions with other parties in order to form a coalition government in Tamil Nadu.
The election result has drawn massive attention because Vijay only launched his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in February 2024. Widely known as one of India’s highest-paid actors, Vijay left full-time cinema after completing his final movie, Jana Nayagan, in 2025. His decision to move completely into politics surprised many fans and industry observers at the time.
Despite his popularity, Vijay’s political journey was not entirely smooth. His campaign period included several challenges, including a tragic stampede during a rally held last October. The actor also faced public scrutiny and controversies during the election campaign. However, his strong fan base and public support continued to grow throughout the election period.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 59 seats while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 47 seats. The results marked a dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu politics as Vijay’s newly formed party rapidly emerged as a serious political challenger within a short period of time.
The excitement surrounding Vijay’s victory quickly spread beyond India and reached Malaysia, where the actor enjoys a massive fan following. In Kuala Lumpur and George Town, fans gathered at Tea Kadai outlets to celebrate the election outcome. The tea shop chain organised a special giveaway event offering free tea to customers who showed congratulatory posters of Vijay.
Tea Kadai co-founder Mohamed Rizwan Abdul Ghafoor Khan said the celebration was organised purely out of admiration for Vijay. According to him, nearly 400 cups of tea were distributed free of charge from evening until midnight as supporters celebrated the actor’s political success. Videos and photographs of the celebrations quickly spread across social media platforms, attracting reactions from fans in both Malaysia and India.
Vijay has maintained close connections with Malaysia for many years. Several of his blockbuster films, including Kuruvi and Kaavalan, were partially filmed in the country. His popularity among Malaysian Tamil audiences has remained exceptionally strong throughout his acting career, making the election celebrations in Malaysia especially significant for his supporters.
Last December, Vijay’s Thalapathy Thiruvizha farewell concert and movie album launch at Bukit Jalil National Stadium attracted nearly 80,000 fans, setting attendance records for a celebrity event in Malaysia. With his latest political victory, many observers believe Vijay is now entering a new phase of influence not only as a film icon but also as a major political figure in Tamil Nadu.
