Shein and Temu, two prominent fast-fashion brands, are facing increasing scrutiny in the United States as top lawmakers call for comprehensive investigations into allegations of forced labour, intellectual property theft, and the distribution of unsafe products.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton initiated an investigation into Shein, following similar investigations across Europe. Senator Tom Cotton has also demanded a federal inquiry into both companies, accusing them of being “Communist Chinese” entities that undermine American businesses through IP infringement.
Shein has stated it takes these issues seriously and intends to assist in the Texas investigation. While its headquarters is based in Singapore, the bulk of Shein's products are manufactured in China. Temu has yet to issue a public statement on the matter.
Cotton pointed out that new US regulations have eliminated the long-standing tariff exemption for low-cost imports, causing a backlog of packages from China. This situation presents a significant opportunity for federal oversight. He further accused Temu of trafficking counterfeit items and Shein of imitating US brand designs at unreasonably low prices.
Paxton's investigation will scrutinize Shein's alleged use of forced labour, the unsafe materials in its products, misleading marketing tactics, and data collection methods. He underlined the need to protect American consumers from “cheap, dangerous, foreign goods.”
Both companies are now under heightened examination in Europe as well. Shein has been asked to limit the sale of childlike sex dolls and weapons, while Temu is currently under investigation in France for allowing access to harmful content for young users.
These actions reflect a broader trend in regulatory measures targeting international digital and retail platforms, including recent legal actions against Roblox over alleged safety violations.
