A Republican senator, Bernie Moreno, has announced plans to introduce legislation to expand the United States’ restrictions on Chinese automakers. The proposed law aims to go beyond existing measures by banning not only vehicle imports but also related software, hardware, and business partnerships involving China.
The move builds on regulations introduced in 2025 by the Biden administration, which effectively barred Chinese passenger vehicles from entering the American market over concerns about data security. US officials have warned that modern vehicles could collect sensitive user information, posing potential national security risks.
Support for tighter restrictions has grown among US automakers and industry groups, who are urging allies in regions such as Europe and North America to adopt similar measures. Moreno also called for coordinated global action, arguing that allowing Chinese automotive technology into critical markets could have long-term security implications.
However, China has criticised the proposal, calling it protectionist and a violation of fair competition principles. The development comes amid broader trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, even as former President Donald Trump has previously expressed openness to Chinese firms building manufacturing plants within the United States.
