US Approves Support Packages for India's Apache Helicopters and M777A2 Howitzers

US Approves Support Packages for India's Apache Helicopters and M777A2 Howitzers

Post by : Shweta

The United States has given the green light for potential sales of support services and defense equipment aimed at bolstering India’s Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 ultra-light howitzers. This decision, announced by the U.S. Department of State under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, signifies a stronger military alliance between Washington and New Delhi.

The estimated value of the Apache helicopter support package stands at approximately 198.2 million US dollars. This deal encompasses vital sustainment and maintenance support for India’s AH-64E Apache helicopters, including engineering services, technical support, logistics assistance, training, publications, and associated program support. Major contractors for this package are expected to be Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Concurrently, the U.S. State Department has also approved a support package worth around 230 million US dollars for India’s M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. This proposal includes comprehensive support such as long-term sustainment, spare parts, repair services, technical assistance, training, and field service support. BAE Systems, a British defense contractor, is likely to be the primary contractor associated with this deal.

Characterized as essential to India’s artillery modernization efforts, the M777A2 howitzers are particularly advantageous in the mountainous border regions due to their lightweight design. India currently operates about 145 M777 systems, many of which were assembled locally through a collaboration between BAE Systems and Mahindra Defence Systems under the 'Make in India' initiative.

The AH-64E Apache helicopters represent some of the most advanced attack helicopters used in the Indian military arsenal. They excel in high-precision strikes, battlefield reconnaissance, anti-armor operations, and combat support. These helicopters have significantly enhanced India’s air combat capabilities, particularly in sensitive border areas and modern warfare scenarios.

According to the U.S. Department of State, the proposed sales will not only support American foreign policy and national security objectives but also strengthen ties with India, which Washington sees as a crucial defense partner in the Indo-Pacific region. Furthermore, it emphasized India's pivotal role in fostering regional stability, peace, and economic growth across South Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific.

Officials noted that these proposed support packages are designed to aid India in addressing both current and future security challenges. The U.S. government is confident that India will seamlessly integrate these systems and services into its armed forces, given its current operational experience with both the Apache helicopters and M777 howitzers.

This approval occurs at a time when defense cooperation between the U.S. and India is rapidly expanding. In the last decade, the two nations have executed numerous significant defense agreements encompassing helicopters, drones, surveillance systems, fighter aircraft technology, and collaborative military exercises. This collaboration has become a cornerstone of the India-U.S. relationship.

Strategic analysts view these latest support packages as part of an increasing American commitment to fortify military alliances in the Indo-Pacific amidst escalating geopolitical rivalries and security apprehensions. India is persistently modernizing its military while enhancing cooperation with Western partners in areas such as logistics, intelligence sharing, and advanced weaponry.

However, before these proposed deals can be finalized, they must receive approval from the U.S. Congress. Typically, such approvals are viewed as procedural once they have been cleared by the State Department and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
