US Reveals New Details on Alleged Chinese Nuclear Test

US Reveals New Details on Alleged Chinese Nuclear Test

Post by : Shakul

The United States has revealed new details about an alleged underground nuclear test that it says China conducted in June 2020. A senior US official stated that seismic data points to an explosion at China’s Lop Nor test site in western China.

According to the US, a remote seismic monitoring station in Kazakhstan detected an event with a magnitude of 2.75 on June 22, 2020. The official said the data does not match patterns seen in earthquakes or mining blasts and instead appears consistent with a single explosive event.

However, the international body responsible for monitoring nuclear tests said the available data is not sufficient to confirm that the event was a nuclear explosion. It reported that two small seismic events were detected close together but were far below the level normally associated with confirmed nuclear tests.

China has strongly rejected the US claims, calling them baseless and politically motivated. Chinese officials said the country has complied with international commitments to avoid nuclear testing and accused the US of using the allegation to justify its own nuclear policies.

The issue comes at a time of growing global concern over nuclear arms control, especially after the expiration of key treaties limiting nuclear weapons. The US says China is rapidly expanding its nuclear capabilities, while China argues that its arsenal remains much smaller than those of the United States and Russia.
