Sailor's Unusual Encounter with Monkey During Thailand Mission

Sailor's Unusual Encounter with Monkey During Thailand Mission

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a bizarre turn of events, a US Navy sailor experienced a monkey attack while visiting Phuket during a shore leave.

The sailor is part of the USS Chief, a minesweeper on a mission in the Middle East. This deployment is related to escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where mines have reportedly been positioned amid ongoing hostilities involving the US, Iran, and Israel.

Post-incident, the injured sailor was promptly evacuated to the US naval base in Sasebo for medical attention. Authorities confirmed that he is in stable condition and that the mishap did not hinder the vessel’s operational objectives.

A military spokesperson highlighted that this incident reflects the unpredictable dangers faced by military personnel during overseas assignments, especially in conflict zones.

Thailand is home to many macaques, known for their assertive behavior and tendency to approach humans for food. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that these monkeys can harbor the Herpes B virus, posing potential risks to people.

Ongoing Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

In parallel developments, tensions remain high in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage that facilitates nearly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transport.

US President Donald Trump has mandated the Navy take decisive measures against any vessels attempting to lay mines in the area. The US military has also acted against ships trying to evade restrictions close to Iranian harbors.

For nearly two months, the strait has been largely obstructed, affecting global supply chains, and peace negotiations have shown minimal advancement.
