A significant United Nations conference aimed at reviewing the global nuclear non-proliferation treaty has concluded without achieving consensus, largely due to profound disagreements between the United States and Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. The four-week gathering took place at the UN headquarters in New York City, involving representatives from 191 NPT member countries.

Known as the NPT, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is one of the crucial international accords designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons while fostering peaceful nuclear energy cooperation. The review conference aimed to tackle rising global tensions, concerns regarding nuclear disarmament, and conflicts associated with advanced nuclear initiatives. However, negotiations were hindered by disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Do Hung Viet, Vietnam’s UN Ambassador who presided over the conference, announced that member states could not reach consensus, not even on a modified draft document. While details on the nations that obstructed the final agreement were not disclosed, diplomats indicated that disagreements related to Iran’s nuclear endeavors were pivotal in the stalemate. This represents the third consecutive unsuccessful outcome for an NPT review conference, following failures in 2015 and 2022.

The US took a strong stand against Iran throughout the conference, accusing Tehran of not fulfilling its treaty obligations. American officials raised alarms about Iran’s uranium enrichment practices and limited interaction with international nuclear inspectors, citing serious concerns regarding potential nuclear weapons development. Washington reiterated its enduring stance that Iran must not attain nuclear weapon capabilities.

Iran dismissed these claims, asserting that the US and Israel were the ones breaching international law through military interventions and political pressure concerning Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iranian representatives contended that their nuclear initiatives are aimed at peaceful civilian applications, including energy production and medical exploration. Tehran also criticized Western countries for perceived adversities in global nuclear policy.

The conference occurred amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, following various military conflicts involving Iran, the US, and Israel. Analysts believe this ongoing strife has intensified global anxieties regarding nuclear security and broader regional instability. Topics discussed also encompassed arms control, nuclear openness, and the ongoing role of international monitoring organizations like the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Numerous disarmament specialists and diplomats expressed frustration over the lack of agreement, cautioning that divisions among major powers could undermine global efforts in nuclear arms control. Critics also highlighted the growing distrust among nuclear-armed states and persistent global conflicts as significant barriers to meaningful disarmament progress.

Despite this lack of consensus, diplomats indicated that discussions on nuclear non-proliferation and international security are set to persist through upcoming negotiations and bilateral talks. UN officials underscored the importance of continuing dialogue to avert further escalation and mitigate the risk of nuclear conflict in an increasingly unpredictable global landscape.
