A Ukrainian drone assault on the Tuapse oil refinery, strategically located on the Black Sea, marks the third strike this month, leading to a significant fire and evacuations in the surrounding residential areas, according to local officials.
In just two weeks, these assaults have inflicted extensive damage, including oil spills into the sea and alarming reports of “black rain” covering the town, leaving an oily mess on streets and buildings.
Following the latest onslaught, over 160 firefighters were dispatched to battle the flames. Krasnodar regional governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated that emergency personnel were confronting “extremely challenging circumstances,” though no injuries have been reported.
Authorities mandated evacuations from neighboring streets, establishing a temporary refuge at a local school. Officials also issued warnings regarding hazardous air pollution, citing the release of combustion byproducts into the atmosphere. Residents have been advised to wear masks, keep windows shut, and minimize outdoor activities.
Local environmental journalist Anastasia Troyanova reported a massive plume of black smoke enveloping the town, accompanied by the overwhelming odor of burning oil.
In response to the incident, Russia's government revealed that President Vladimir Putin had directed the emergencies minister to oversee firefighting efforts and cleanup. The Kremlin accused Ukraine of targeting oil export facilities, claiming these attacks aggravate the instability of global energy markets.
Ukraine's military confirmed the assault, asserting that the refinery sustains Russia’s military-industrial complex and is thus a legitimate target. Kyiv's actions are aimed at diminishing Russia's capacity to sustain its military campaign.
In recent months, there has been an uptick in Ukraine’s strikes against Russian energy facilities, which it deems essential for financing the conflict that escalated in 2022.
Separately, Ukrainian sources reported a Russian drone strike on Kyiv that resulted in one injury and multiple fires, including damage at a cemetery.
