Al Ain: The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has launched an innovative Smart Mushroom House, a research hub aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and reinforcing the nation’s food security ambitions.
Situated at Al Foah Research Farm in Al Ain, this facility utilizes cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to maintain an ideal environment for mushroom cultivation. This initiative corresponds with the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051 and supports circular bioeconomy principles.
Engineered by experts at UAEU’s College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine as part of the ARIFSID project, the facility is focused on converting agricultural byproducts—particularly date palm waste—into enriched substrates for mushroom growth. This effort is spearheaded by Dr. Shyam S. Kurup alongside collaborators from the University of Malaya’s Omex Laboratory.
Featuring three advanced cultivation tents and a primary incubator, the Smart Mushroom House allows for meticulous management of temperature, humidity, lighting, and airflow, enabling the simultaneous growth of various mushroom species under ideal conditions.
With the ability to manage up to 600 cultivation bags per cycle, this facility can handle nearly three tonnes of substrate, achieving production yields between 20-30% based on specific species. Current studies involve oyster mushrooms, lion’s mane, Ganoderma, turkey tail, and king oyster, along with initiatives to domesticate local desert truffles known as Faqa or Zubaidi.
In addition to cultivation, the project investigates creative uses for mycelium, including functional foods, edible films, and transforming spent mushroom substrates into nano-biochar, enhancing sustainability practices.
A significant aspect of this initiative is fostering local talent. The center currently accommodates numerous research projects led by Emirati students, focused on refining production methods suited for the UAE’s climate. Their efforts have received accolades at various national sustainability and agriculture forums.
The Smart Mushroom House also acts as an educational platform for students, farmers, and anyone interested in sustainable agriculture. By turning agricultural waste into valuable food resources, this project exemplifies the integration of smart technology, sustainability, and innovation.
Through this pioneering venture, UAEU affirms its commitment to delivering research-driven solutions that enhance food security in arid and dryland regions.
