Sheikh Mohamed Extends Sympathy to Philippines Following Quake

Sheikh Mohamed Extends Sympathy to Philippines Following Quake

Post by : Badri Ariffin

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has conveyed his deepest condolences to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. after a severe earthquake struck, claiming at least 37 lives and injuring over 400 individuals.

In his message to President Marcos, Sheikh Mohamed expressed sympathy for the victims' families and the Filipino people as rescue and recovery operations are underway in the affected regions.

Previously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE also voiced its support for the Philippines, extending condolences to the families impacted by the disaster and wishing for a rapid recovery of the injured.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck early Monday morning, roughly 20 kilometers off the southern coast of Sarangani province. The tremor triggered tsunami alerts in multiple nations and was felt throughout large portions of Mindanao as well as in Manado, a city on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island located approximately 420 kilometers away.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing as emergency personnel work diligently to find survivors and support the affected communities.

General Santos City, which has over 700,000 residents, reported significant damage and has been declared a state of calamity after numerous buildings collapsed. Debris littered the streets, and downed power lines and utility posts caused extensive disruptions.

Officials are evaluating the full scope of the damage as relief efforts progress following one of the strongest earthquakes to have impacted the region in recent years.
