UAE Leads the Way with AstraZeneca’s Baxfendy Approval

In a landmark move, the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has granted approval for Baxfendy, a novel treatment designed by AstraZeneca for individuals battling uncontrolled high blood pressure.

This designation positions the UAE as the inaugural country to authorize this groundbreaking medicine, paving the way for swifter access to cutting-edge healthcare solutions and advanced treatments for cardiovascular conditions.

Baxfendy, available in doses of 1 mg and 2 mg, utilizes the active ingredient baxdrostat and is intended for patients whose blood pressure remains high even while taking current antihypertensive medications.

By inhibiting an enzyme linked to aldosterone production, a hormone associated with hypertension, Baxfendy targets the underlying issue of resistant hypertension, providing a tailored treatment option for those not responding to traditional therapies.

Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, the Director-General of the EDE, noted that this approval symbolizes the UAE’s dedication to delivering cutting-edge medical solutions and the importance of flexible regulatory pathways for quick access to novel medications.

She emphasized that the EDE is continuously enhancing the approval and access frameworks in alignment with national healthcare goals, which aids in improving health outcomes and better management of chronic ailments, particularly cardiovascular issues.

Sameh El Fangary, Gulf Country President at AstraZeneca, expressed his enthusiasm for the approval, which broadens treatment options for hypertension patients and underscores confidence in the research backing the drug.

He reiterated the company’s commitment to collaborating with UAE healthcare partners to enhance patient access to innovative treatments and bolster long-term health outcomes.

The authorization follows positive findings from two Phase III clinical trials, BaxHTN and Bax24, which demonstrated significant and clinically relevant reductions in blood pressure when Baxfendy was administered alongside standard care.

This approval is a component of the UAE’s broader strategy to fortify pharmaceutical security, enhance healthcare system readiness, and ensure ongoing access to pioneering treatments that benefit public health and community wellness.
