UAE Introduces National Guide to Transform Student Work Experience
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) has unveiled a comprehensive Guide for Governance of Work Experience aimed at universities and vocational training institutions across the UAE. The initiative seeks to make work experience a core part of higher education, ensuring students gain practical skills that align with the needs of the labor market.
Previously known as practical training, work experience under the new framework will now follow standardized national guidelines. This move addresses gaps in supervision, quality, and compliance, ensuring that students are fully prepared to transition from classroom learning to professional environments.
The guide provides a clear roadmap for higher education institutions, work experience providers, and students. Universities are now required to create structured plans, assign qualified supervisors, and monitor student progress. Meanwhile, organizations hosting students must maintain safe, professional environments, appoint skilled mentors, and continuously refine their programs. Students, on their part, are expected to demonstrate professionalism, maintain regular attendance, and record their activities in certified work experience logs.
MoHESR will oversee the implementation through regular field visits and unannounced checks, working closely with the Ministry of Emiratisation and Human Resources to ensure adherence to quality standards and prevent improper practices. Operational manuals and templates included in the guide will help institutions design programs that are practical, impactful, and aligned with international best practices.
The move reflects a broader commitment to strengthening the link between education and employment in the UAE. By standardizing work experience, students will not only gain industry-relevant skills but also improve their employability, creating a stronger, more capable future workforce.
