The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has unveiled the "AI for Development" initiative, allocating $1 billion to foster artificial intelligence projects across African nations. This significant announcement came during the G20 summit from His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
The initiative seeks to catalyze economic and social advancements in Africa by enhancing digital infrastructure, improving government services, and raising productivity levels. It aims to assist developing nations in leveraging AI within critical sectors such as education, agriculture, and infrastructure, generating innovative solutions for rapid growth and sustainable development.
Overseen by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, this project collaborates closely with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency to align with long-term development objectives. This partnership underscores the UAE’s dedication to empowering developing nations through advanced technology and utilizing the potential of AI for transformative change.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, the Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, remarked that the initiative underscores the UAE’s conviction that artificial intelligence is vital for equitable growth and sustainable development. He highlighted the UAE’s objective to aid African nations in overcoming their challenges and establishing more resilient economies through a synthesis of technology, funding, and partnerships.
He also noted that the incorporation of AI into education, agriculture, and infrastructure could pave the way for inclusive development. Furthermore, this initiative allows UAE businesses to engage in significant projects that enhance economic and technological relations between the UAE and African countries, supporting the global mission to fulfill sustainable development goals.
This initiative also pays tribute to the humanitarian vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, and mirrors the continuous support from the nation's leadership, including President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, reiterated the UAE’s commitment to aiding communities globally, reaffirming ongoing project implementations that harness AI for development, particularly in Africa. He described the initiative as part of the UAE's continuous strategy to enhance living standards and create a promising future for those facing development hurdles.
Many African nations require initiatives like this to advance education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as the UAE continues to emerge as a global leader in artificial intelligence, frequently ranking high on international digital advancement indices.
Since its foundation in 1971, the UAE has contributed over AED 152 billion in aid to African countries. The new AI for Development initiative builds upon that legacy, designed to escalate AI-based efforts across the continent. It further solidifies the UAE’s position as a hub for innovative technologies and smart systems, championing development, modernization, and inclusive growth worldwide.
This groundbreaking initiative embodies the UAE’s pledge to global leadership in technology and development, offering intelligent solutions that foster sustainable progress in Africa and beyond.
