A deadly shooting incident in southern Turkey has left six people dead and eight others injured, according to local media reports quoting Turkish officials. The attack took place in the Tarsus district of Mersin province on Monday evening.
Reports said the suspected gunman allegedly first killed his ex-wife before driving to a nearby restaurant. At the restaurant, the attacker reportedly shot dead the owner and one employee before continuing the violent rampage in nearby areas.
Local media stated that three additional victims, including a shepherd and a lorry driver, were later found dead near the attack locations. Authorities have not yet officially released the identity of the suspect or confirmed the motive behind the killings.
After carrying out the attacks, the gunman reportedly fled the area. Turkish police launched a massive overnight operation involving helicopters and special security teams to search for the suspect across the district.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the attack as a “heinous” act during a public statement on Monday night. He expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wished a speedy recovery to the injured victims.
Emergency services rushed several injured people to nearby hospitals, while security forces sealed parts of the area during the investigation. Authorities are continuing to collect evidence and question witnesses connected to the case.
The shocking incident has raised concerns about violent crime and public safety in the region as police continue their efforts to locate and arrest the suspect responsible for the attack.
