Trump Faces Backlash Over Greenland Penguin Meme

Trump Faces Backlash Over Greenland Penguin Meme

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a new twist on his longstanding interest in Greenland, US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy with a viral meme circulating on the internet. The meme, which was shared by the White House, depicts Trump strolling with a penguin toward snow-capped mountains, a visual that has swiftly gained traction on social media.

In the illustration, the penguin prominently displays the US flag while the mountainous backdrop features the Greenland flag, paired with the caption “Embrace The Penguin.” This imagery is a nod to the quirky “Nihilist Penguin” meme from Werner Herzog’s acclaimed 2007 documentary Encounters at the End of the World.

Despite its intention to amuse, the post met with immediate backlash as social media users pointed out the glaring geographical error—penguins are exclusive to the Southern Hemisphere. Notably, journalist Pippa Crerar highlighted the misinformation, leading to a flurry of humorous edits that replaced the penguin with a polar bear.

This isn’t the first time Trump has shared AI-generated images concerning Greenland. Earlier posts included one featuring him, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio next to a fictional sign declaring Greenland as a US territory. Another graphic depicted an expanded version of the United States that incorporated Greenland, Canada, and Venezuela.

Continuing to push his Greenland acquisition initiatives, Trump has ramped up his comments since taking office, even threatening tariffs on certain European nations while discussing military access to the island.

The meme incident underscores the intersection of Trump’s Greenland aspirations and contemporary internet culture, showcasing the global reactions that follow.
