During a recent dinner event, US President Donald Trump expressed criticism towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that the Ukraine war should have concluded in a week but has now extended into its fourth year. He pointed out the intense personal rivalry between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a critical barrier to peace.
Trump shared his belief that he was close to facilitating a peace agreement between the two leaders just two months ago. “I thought we had a deal. The animosity between the two is significant, and it stands in the way. It’s hard to believe that I managed to foster peace in the Middle East but couldn’t mediate between these two. Still, I remain hopeful,” Trump remarked.
In a direct remark aimed at Putin, Trump noted that the drawn-out conflict has tarnished the Russian leader’s public image. “What we need from President Putin is to end this. Stop the killings of Ukrainians and Russians because he’s responsible for many Russian casualties as well. It’s a war he should have won in just one week, yet here we are in year four,” he stated.
Additionally, Trump mentioned that India had assured him it would halt purchases of Russian oil, which could potentially aid in reaching a truce between Russia and Ukraine. “If India withdraws from buying oil, it simplifies matters greatly. They’ve promised me they will stop soon and may reconsider post-conflict,” he explained.
Last week, Trump reiterated that both the United States and NATO allies were ramping up pressure on Russia to conclude the war, following his unsuccessful attempts to mediate a ceasefire. During a discussion with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in the Oval Office, Trump noted, “Yes, we’re increasing the pressure together. NATO has been remarkably supportive.”
After his meeting with President Zelenskyy, Trump conveyed optimism regarding Ukraine’s capacity to reclaim all its territories. “With the backing of the European Union, I believe Ukraine is poised to fight and reclaim all of its original land,” he declared on his social media platform.
Trump’s statements have drawn worldwide attention as the conflict enters its fourth year, highlighting the intricate interplay of international diplomacy, military tactics, and personal rivalries among global leaders.
