US President Donald Trump is set to visit China on May 14–15 for high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House has confirmed, following a delay caused by the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The visit, which will take place in Beijing, was originally scheduled for late March but had to be postponed as the United States shifted its focus to the escalating US-Israel war with Iran. Officials said the rescheduling was mutually understood, with China acknowledging the circumstances behind the delay.
According to the White House, the upcoming trip will mark Trump’s first visit to China during his current term and his first since 2017. It also represents a key diplomatic engagement between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The meeting follows previous interactions between Trump and Xi, including their last in-person discussion in South Korea, where both sides agreed on a temporary easing of trade tensions. The upcoming talks are expected to focus on economic cooperation, strategic stability, and global security concerns.
White House officials also indicated that Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are expected to host Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan for a reciprocal visit to Washington later this year, though specific dates have not yet been announced.
The delay highlights how the Iran conflict has impacted US foreign policy priorities, temporarily shifting attention away from efforts to stabilise relations with China. Analysts view the May meeting as a crucial opportunity to reset dialogue between Washington and Beijing amid an increasingly complex global landscape.
