A devastating incident took place in Buggenhout, Belgium, on Tuesday when a train struck a school minibus, resulting in the loss of four lives and multiple injuries.
Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prévot reported that the school transport vehicle, which was ferrying children, was involved in the early morning collision.
The public prosecutor confirmed that the deceased include two young children aged 15 and 12, a 27-year-old teacher, and a 49-year-old bus driver.
At the time of the accident, nine individuals were inside the minibus, comprising seven children, a supervisor, and the driver.
Authorities revealed that five of the injured children were taken to the hospital in serious condition, although their status has since improved, according to officials.
Fortunately, the supervisor on board managed to survive the tragic event.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the accident.
