The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), part of Abu Dhabi's Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), has launched its latest innovation, Falcon Perception. This advanced multimodal artificial intelligence model is engineered to rival top-tier global AI systems.
Despite its compact size with approximately 600 million parameters, Falcon Perception excels in tasks such as object segmentation, visual comprehension, and document analysis. It aims to deliver performance on par with considerably larger AI models while consuming fewer computational resources.
Multimodal AI systems, like Falcon Perception, are capable of simultaneously processing varied data forms, including both text and images. Unlike conventional AI, which primarily focuses on language, this model uniquely amalgamates visual understanding with text comprehension within a single framework.
According to TII, Falcon Perception can pinpoint and segment objects in intricate images, extract text from documents, and respond to natural language queries concerning visual content. For instance, it can accurately identify objects within busy scenes or tally items, even in visually complex environments.
This unified approach minimizes the necessity for distinct systems dedicated to language and vision tasks, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing complexity. It is especially advantageous for practical applications where computing power and processing speed may be constrained.
The institute foresees diverse applications such as robotics, industrial automation, manufacturing quality checks, and extensive data annotation for AI training purposes.
Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of TII, remarked that this model embodies the institute's commitment to developing advanced AI solutions that can be implemented across various sectors, fortifying the UAE's AI capabilities.
Falcon Perception has performed impressively in benchmark evaluations, showcasing proficiency in object segmentation, complex visual interpretation, and document-related intelligence. Its performance aligns closely with larger models like Meta’s SAM3 and Alibaba’s Qwen in essential assessment metrics.
Dr. Hakim Hacid, Chief Researcher at TII’s Artificial Intelligence and Digital Research Center, noted that this model proves a single, efficient architecture can manage intricate vision and language tasks without multiple processing stages.
As the inaugural Falcon model dedicated solely to dense multimodal perception tasks, Falcon Perception will be available as open-source on Hugging Face, encouraging international collaboration in multimodal AI research and development.
