Devastating Floods Engulf Southern Thailand; Military Stabilizes Rescue Operations

Devastating Floods Engulf Southern Thailand; Military Stabilizes Rescue Operations

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Southern Thailand is grappling with severe flooding after intense rainfall has elevated water levels up to two meters in various regions. This phenomenon is impacting nine provinces and has resulted in at least 13 fatalities. The floods are part of a broader monsoon emergency affecting nearby Malaysia as well, where eight states are similarly afflicted.

In light of the disaster, Thailand’s military has assumed responsibility for rescue and relief initiatives. On Tuesday, a C-130 cargo plane was dispatched with food, medicine, and water supplies for residents in need. Moreover, the navy has mobilized a fleet of 14 boats and the aircraft carrier Chakri Naruebet, equipped to serve as a floating hospital, along with two helicopters, medical staff, and field kitchens capable of delivering 3,000 meals per day.

The southern city of Hat Yai, a critical commercial center, has been particularly hard hit, receiving an unprecedented 335 millimeters (approximately 13 inches) of rainfall in just one day—the most in 300 years. Evacuation efforts in Hat Yai are utilizing boats, high-clearance vehicles, and jet skis to assist residents as they navigate the flooding.

Provincial governor Ratthasart Chidchod has urged immediate evacuations, citing deteriorating conditions that may hinder food and medical assistance. Footage from television broadcasts revealed streets submerged in murky water, abandoned vehicles, and residents relying on improvised flotation devices for safety.

The Matchima Rescue Center, a volunteer organization in Hat Yai, reported a surge of calls over the past several days requesting evacuations and basic provisions. Many stranded individuals have turned to social media to urgently seek help, highlighting their dire circumstances and lack of essential resources.

In total, around 2.1 million people across Thailand are affected by the flooding, with approximately 13,000 relocated to shelters, though many remain cut off from emergency support.

In Malaysia, the situation is similarly severe, with over 19,000 individuals evacuated to 126 centers, especially in the northern regions. Rescue teams are actively working in inundated homes, focusing on assisting the elderly and children to safety. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed sympathy for those affected and emphasized the importance of adhering to evacuation requests to ensure safety.

The floods are inflicting economic strain on Thailand, with the central bank reporting that 70% of bank branches in the worst-hit areas are shuttered. Industrial production is also suffering, as 17 power plants have ceased operation, while numerous factories in Songkhla province have succumbed to flooding, leading to estimated losses of 1.28 billion baht (around $39.6 million). Factory operations continue to face hurdles due to disrupted supply chains.

This catastrophic flooding crisis is a source of great distress for countless residents who remain stranded as water levels rise. Rescue teams and volunteers are tirelessly working to provide assistance and evacuate at-risk individuals, as the situation continues to develop.

This disaster underscores the complexities presented by seasonal monsoon flooding in the region and the critical need for a coordinated emergency response to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
