Hamilton police have obtained judicial permission to make public the identity of a teenage suspect linked to the tragic shooting at Jackson Square mall. This incident, which occurred on Friday evening, resulted in the death of 16-year-old Nabil Askafe, and officials have labeled it a targeted attack.
The suspect, a 14-year-old boy from Hamilton, is charged with second-degree murder. In light of legal protections for minors, police needed a court's authorization to disclose his identity. The judicial order allowing this announcement is effective until April 29, as officers intensify their efforts to apprehend the suspect.
The shooting transpired around 5 p.m. inside the bustling shopping center, following a confrontation between the victim and two individuals. Investigators believe one suspect had a firearm concealed on him, larger than a standard handgun, which was employed in the incident. Authorities are also calling on the second individual—who is reportedly unarmed—to come forward and aid in the investigation.
Emergency teams reached the scene shortly after the gunfire erupted. Reports indicate that the victim managed to move a short distance before collapsing, where he was later discovered and pronounced dead. This violent act has profoundly impacted the local community, with officials expressing their condolences to the victim's family and loved ones.
Detective Robert Di Ianni has made a direct appeal to the suspect, advising him to seek legal representation and turn himself in. Authorities are currently examining surveillance recordings and interviewing witnesses to establish a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the shooting.
Following the incident, the shopping center was briefly evacuated but has since reopened after authorities cleared the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, and police will provide updates when new information surfaces.
