West Bengal is witnessing a major political transformation as Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to become the first BJP Chief Minister of the state. The development comes after the BJP secured a massive victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly. The historic result has ended the long political dominance of the Trinamool Congress and marked a major breakthrough for the BJP in eastern India.
On Friday, newly elected BJP MLAs unanimously chose Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party during a meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Senior BJP leaders and legislators supported Adhikari’s name for the top post, officially clearing the path for him to form the next government in West Bengal. Amit Shah stated that all proposals received during the meeting were in favor of Suvendu Adhikari’s leadership.
Following his election as legislature party leader, Suvendu Adhikari visited Kolkata’s Lok Bhavan along with several senior BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee, and Tapas Roy. He met Governor R.N. Ravi and formally staked claim to form the government in the state. The Governor is expected to officially invite the BJP to form the new administration following the party’s clear majority in the Assembly.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday. Several senior BJP leaders, Union ministers, and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the event. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are also expected to remain present during the ceremony, which the BJP has projected as a historic political moment for West Bengal.
Suvendu Adhikari’s rise to the Chief Minister’s post marks a significant shift in Bengal politics. Once a senior leader in the Trinamool Congress, Adhikari joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections and later emerged as one of the strongest opposition voices in the state. His political profile grew significantly after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency in 2021, a victory that strengthened his position within the BJP leadership.
The BJP’s sweeping electoral victory has triggered major political discussions across the country. Political analysts believe the result could reshape the political landscape of eastern India and strengthen the BJP’s national presence even further. The Trinamool Congress, which won 80 seats, suffered one of its biggest electoral setbacks in recent years after ruling the state for over a decade.
Security arrangements have been tightened across Kolkata ahead of the oath-taking ceremony as thousands of BJP supporters are expected to gather at Brigade Parade Ground. The event is being viewed as one of the most significant political transitions in West Bengal’s recent history, with Suvendu Adhikari preparing to officially lead the state’s first BJP government since Independence.
